The Scale of the Solar System collection

“The scale of the solar system” is a four-part activity guide that an engaging and informative collection, combining hands-on learning with parent-led education. Each section is centred around a focussed activity and includes full instructions for the parent to tailor easily to the required level.

“The scale of the solar system” is our first collection of themed experiments that have been tried-and-tested in a home-schooling and lockdown-limiting environment. This package will help you to guide your child’s knowledge and understanding of Earth’s structure, the sizes of the planets, their order and the enormity of the solar system.

This 24-page pdf goes beyond the experiments presented on this site and includes new material that sets the solar system in space and time.

The earth beneath our feet is a guide to drawing the layers of the Earth to scale from the core through to outer space.

Making the planets uses a homemade playdough to model the planets to scale.

The planets in their orbits shows how to place your models in relation to each other. This can be scaled down from about 1.5 kilometres down to about 50 metres as you see fit.

The planets orbiting the sun makes a 4-metre model of the solar system and compares how long each planet to orbit our sun.

Double page question sheets follow the four sections. These are aimed at different ages from around three to over nine years old. These can be tailored to your child’s abilities and can be used as a starting point for further research and discussion.
